Sogndal is the regional centre covering the inner part of the Sognefjord area with a population of about
30 000. Sogndal municipality has over 7000 inhabitants and about 2 000 students during term.
Municipalities are the atomic unit of local government in Norway and are responsible for primary education (through 10th grade), outpatient health services, senior citizen services, unemployment and other social services, economic development, and municipal roads.
The town hall is centrally located at Gravensteinsgata 17. Here you can find an information desk for public services, Tenestetorget, that welcomes you. The staff can provide you with general public information and a wide array of public services, f. e. parking license and application forms for kindergarten and schools. During the summer (15.05-14.09) Tenestetorget closes 15.00.
Useful information
The public library is centrally located at Sogndal Kulturhus, where you also can find the local cinema and theatre. The library has magazines, newspapers and books in English. It houses the local historical archive. The library can also help you with information about public services and they offer free internet access. Opening hours in the summer: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10-15. Thursday 10:00-18:00.
